Director, Field Property Claims

Hastings Mutual is currently looking for a Director, Field Property Claims. The individual in this role will direct the property claims field staff to ensure that claims are properly investigated, evaluated, and resolved within the company‚ s contractual and legal obligations while ensuring timely service and appropriate payments to claimants and policyholders.
Reporting to the Vice President, Claim, this position will be based at our Hastings, Michigan, corporate headquarters.
Position Duties& Responsibilities
  • Provides strategic direction for the field organization in support of the claims business groups and Hastings Mutual's larger objectives while working closely with the Vice President of Claims as well as others in the management team.
  • Responsible for the overall direction of the Property field staff (approximately 60 employees) to include coaching, training, performance management, and human resource related processes.
  • Delivers direction and development of staff to ensure that they have sufficient knowledge and skill to resolve claims timely and equitably.
  • Ensures that field staff provides prompt and courteous service in accord with department standards and corporate service goals.
  • Monitors performance metrics, reviewing open and closed claims to ensure that claims are handled according to company policies and procedures, resulting in an equitable resolution within the company‚ s contractual and legal liability.
  • Directs and controls the establishment of appropriate claim case reserves to ensure that future costs are accurately assessed, and the company can determine its financial position.
  • Maximizes the utilization of company loss and expense saving programs while directing and monitoring the use of outside vendors to ensure quality service and cost-effectiveness.
  • Identifies and pursues salvage and subrogation opportunities to minimize claim losses and improve company results.
  • Responsible for ensuring that staff properly utilizes ClaimCenter and OnBase to document losses to minimize the possibility of erroneous payments and to move toward total‚ paperless‚ claim handling.
  • Coordinates all relevant claim information from the field with Loss Control, Underwriting, Marketing, etc., to maximize the company‚ s effectiveness in avoiding future losses and to better manage the current business.
  • Participates and leads tactical and strategic projects both within claims and within the larger company structure.
Candidate Requirements& Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in a Business or Insurance related designation, required.
  • Graduate level education and industry professional designations preferred.
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience within multi-line insurance required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of supervisory/management experience required.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully combine leadership, management, and technical knowledge.
  • Successful experience in effectively planning, organizing, and completing tasks independently without supervision.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, communication (written and verbal), and presentation ability, in addition to engaging positively with both internal and external customers.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
